Anything that native speakers of English would hear, read or use can be described as authentic material. These materials are used for real purpose; we have to take in consideration that, they were not designed for the EFL students. Some examples of the variety of sources of authentic material are: brochures, maps, newspapers, recipes, songs, menu, magazines, bills, tickets, labels, etc. I think teachers should pay more attention to this alternative and nontraditional way of teaching because it has many advantages:
• Students are exposed to real language
• With only one piece of text teachers can create various activities and tasks
• The material is eye catching for the students
• Is interesting and motivating for the students
Moreover teachers could find some disadvantages as well:
• Authentic text may be difficult to understand
• Preparation of the activities may be time consuming
• Students may not understand the information given
I believe authentic material has a lot to offer to the EFL classes because in some way it will help the students to develop some interest in the foreign culture; and is the teachers’ responsibility to carefully select the material according to the students ‘needs.
